How to Twitter: tweet•ease: to successfully woo the twitterati

The Essential Guide to Shameless Success on Twitter

How to Twitter tweet-ease, the bookI’ll admit there were times when I thought I would never finish experimenting with Twitter and get this book written.  We’ve spent months researching all things Twitter and I tested, experimented and played with Twitter almost full time for a couple of months.

This is a collection of what I’ve found that works or doesn’t work.  What I like, and things I really don’t like.

48 pages of actionable, planned activity on Twitter to bring you followers, interaction, engagement, attention for your brand, your company or yourself.

Without buying followers or trading followers, I wooed the twitterati

I went from 2100 followers to 6800 followers in 67 days.  Here’s the proof:

how to tweet

Disclosure: I did test automated services for about 21 days, and I’ll tell you why I don’t recommend any.

You can see  that it keeps on working:

You can read the whole pitch at tweet•ease, the book.

Share it on Twitter or Facebook, and Chapter One is yours.

You have to log-in to Facebook, and be on the lookout for pop up blockers . . . if you are using one Facebook is a little tricky.

How To Twitter and Why

How to TwitterHow to Twitter and Why Everyone Should: 3 Great Reasons

I’ve been doing a lot of research about Twitter lately – Tweets, Tools, Tweeps, Twits – I’m not quite the ‘Social Media Scientist’ Dan Zarrella is, but I am researching methods for a Twitter book and am so pleased with my results, I didn’t want to save it all for the book. Beyond numbers of followers (we all want more) and writing gigs (I want more) there are the friendships that arise unexpectedly, seemingly from nowhere.

The point of social media is, well, social.  Something we tend to forget in our day to day frenzy to make the bucks.  Thousands of people in posts and articles, eBooks and hardcovers are telling us how to monetize Twitter (and Facebook, but this is not a Zuck piece). They will remind us somewhere in their copy that the point of social media is to be social, but their main point is whatever they are doing (or hawking) at the moment to make money.

Social Tweeps you won’t find anywhere else

In the last few months, I’ve met or encountered people through Twitter whose paths I would have never crossed without a tweet. Gifted, creative, interesting people that aren’t trying to sell me anything, that I’m not trying to sell anything to.  They are  just fun and witty and thoughtful, and I hope the ‘tweep’ relationship we have will endure if not become even more solid and refined.

Apart from the obvious attraction of his twitter handle, @NoRestrictions, John Paul Rice makes films that have a voice.  A voice that should be heard.  We’ve talked about what he does, we’ve talked about what I do, and he gave me a private screening of one of his latest films. One Hour Fantasy Girl, which made me cringe, laugh, and almost cry – although not at the same time.

We’re not intimate, but we’re having fun. Twitter is the only thing that made that meeting possible. . . .

PS, I’m hoping for another premier invite when I get back to LA.

I read about Michael Brandvold in a Klout newsletter. (Note, he’s since added Klout Star to his bio.  I love it!)

For the uninformed, Michael has managed the online process for KISS, Greg Kihn, Motley Crüe, Rod Stewart, Madonna, Ozzy Osbourne, Madonna and Britney Spears. He recounts that he was doing social media work for those guys before any guru defined social media.

I fell in love with him when I read this quote  from George Bernard Shaw, “The secret to success is to offend the greatest number of people.”

We’ve done back and forth, he knows I’m an unabashed fan of his work, his history, himself.  He is bright, funny and FUN.  (No more blushing! You are the man!)

We’ve just been ‘tweeting’ a little while, but I look forward to hearing from him, and smile even before I read his tweets.  He’s that kind of guy, and I’m glad I’ve gotten to know him in 140 characters or less!

Klout Score comes with perks

Klout Score

Having Klout means perks

Aside from the obvious perks that are listed on the Klout website (and this is just a small sample) there are unannounced perks companies are willing to bestow after they check your Klout score.

Perks listed on the Klout website:

  • invino
Influencers are invited to receive a $10 credit and Insider access to phenomenal wines at unmatched values, delivered right to your door by invino.
  • Spreecast
Spreecast is the new social video platform that lets people broadcast together, creating shared experiences that inform and entertain. Key Influencers get to try it before anyone else!
  • AXE
Klout has teamed up with Axe to bring you a free sample of Axe Hold and Touch hair gel.

Real World Perks you may happen upon

While you’re looking up perks you qualify for on the Klout.Com website, other people are checking your Klout Score – Checking into a Vegas hotel? They may look up your Klout Score during check in and upgrade your accommodations . . . Calling a company to ask a question, or complain about a product? They may check your Klout score before putting you on hold for ten minutes!  Real world perks.

According to DemocratandChronicle.com, Audi, Disney, Nike and Starbucks are among companies who regularly leverage their customer’s Klout score.

Think about it – You have five or ten thousand followers on twitter, or a Facebook page with thousands of fans. Does anyone want you to speak badly of them? No!

And, some of them will give you gifts in the form of perks, so you’ll talk them up.

Once again, Klout matters

Astonishingly, all that you do playing with social media adds up to tangible rewards from companies who want to use Your power in social media.

Having good Klout means getting those perks. Online and offline.

Entrepreneurs want Word of Mouth, Not Social Proof

Word of Mouth Recommendations Stronger

I read today in an  article by Emily Maltby (WSJ) that entrepreneurs are more interested in word of mouth referrals than the social proof offered by Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

Small-business insurer Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. hired Opinium Research LLP to conduct online interviews in May of 2011. They polled 304 U.S. business owners & managers of companies with less than 250 employees. The results were surprising to me:

  • 4% use social media as a marketing tool
  • 50% want word-of-mouth recommendations (this wasn’t surprising)
  • 28% have a company Facebook page
  • 18% have a company LinkedIn page or group
  • 8% have a company blog
  • 6% have a YouTube or video-streaming channel
  • 2% have a company Twitter feed

the companies who  are using social media are using it to increase brand awareness and generate sales

Ms. Maltby noted

The Hiscox study supports other research showing that the majority of owners haven’t found social media to be a vital part of their businesses.”

Google+ For Business PagesIf you keep your google+ profile private, Google will delete it after July 31, 2011.

Interesting info in the help section of Google+: there will be no private Google+ profile.

Google+ help

The purpose of Google Profiles is to enable you to manage your online identity. Today, nearly all Google Profiles are public. We believe that using Google Profiles to help people find and connect with you online is how the product is best used. Private profiles don’t allow this, so we have decided to require all profiles to be public.

Keep in mind that your full name and gender are the only required information that will be displayed on your profile; you’ll be able to edit or remove any other information that you don’t want to share.

If you currently have a private profile but you do not wish to make your profile public, you can delete your profile. Or, you can simply do nothing. All private profiles will be deleted after July 31, 2011.”

Edward Burns, Nice Guy Johnny, powered by social media

My Hero: Edward Burns

He has a list of screen credits that is incredibly impressive, and he’s good lookin’. (You need to hear me say that with a Southern accent, it will mean more!) But the reason I want you to know about him in this moment is the way he has leveraged social media in his indy movie productions, and how very successful he’s been at it.

His new movie “Newlyweds” had a reported budget of only $9,000 which he tweeted was broken down into “5k for actors, 2k insurance, 2k food and drink. 9k in the can.”

He has a slick, sexy blog at http://www.edwardburns.net/

Edward Burns Website

Yeah, look closely. Built on WordPress. (just sayin’)

He posts to his Twitter @edward_burns (no college interns for him!), and has a Facebook page, that he uses to interact with fans.

And, of course, a YouTube Channel, edward burns films for the trailer and film information.

EVERYTHING I’ve told you you should be doing to promote your brand!

No more lectures; here’s the trailer from “Nice Guy Johnny” – it is funny, and touching. Watch the trailer; rent the flick from Netflix. And when you’re done, work on that social media campaign of yours!

Edward Burns is known for acting, but he writes, produces, directs

In fact, his film credits are too many for me to list through the keyboard

Social Media is bigger than Porn

This video shows the staggering numbers of activity on the internet in one form of ‘social media’ or another.

Part of the world’s most watched Social Media video series; “Social Media Revolution” by Erik Qualman. Based on #1 International Best Selling Book Socialnomics by Erik Qualman. This is a shorter version that includes new social media statistics for 2011.

If you aren’t in the social swim, what’s keeping you?

Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, with populations larger than countries, perhaps continents . . . Apparently it is irresistible.

How to Blog and Why You Should Already Be in the Blogosphere

Free Blog Real Estate on the Net

There are lots of free places to enter the blog world – WordPress.Com will give you a free wordpress site, Blogger (Google) will give you free web real estate, and if you’re new to the habit, they are probably a good place to start.

Already Committed to a “blog of your own”?

If you’re sure you’re going to blog; you know you want to build a brand for yourself, or your company, I’d highly recommend you buy a domain, install wordpress and start with everything in place to gain traction with the search engines.  I started off with Squarespace, which is a very sophisticated platform, but it cost me about $250 a year, and I didn’t have the controls I’d have liked. Moving an entire blog to a new domain AND a new platform (WordPress) turned out to be a real pain in the neck, and I know I lost some posts in the process.

  • Buy a domain
  • Get a hosting account (Hostgator has a good deal and an excellent WordPress installation process)
  • Install WordPress
  • Have Fun!

Having trouble deciding that you should have a blog?

I found some pretty compelling statistics and some really great quotes at Hubspot:

The bottom line is that blogging is like sex. !

You can’t fake it. You can’t fake passion. You can’t fake wanting to engage with the public. If you do, it will ultimately be an unsatisfying experience for both ! the blogger and their readers.”

Kevin Anderson, Freelance Journalist & Former Blogs Editor for The Guardian

“In God we trust, all others bring data.”

- Edward Deming

If that isn’t enough, get the entire 100 Awesome Marketing Stats, Charts, & Graphs [Data] from Hubspot.

I sent an excerpt of the Hubspot data to all my clients, present, former, and potential! to remind them how powerful blogs can be.  I’m a huge proponent of blogging as a way to get attention – to develop your presence on the internet and help build your business.

As a Thesis developer, you all probably also know that I’m big on how a website looks, and functions, and it should be obvious that for your blog to work at bringing in readers, who convert to customers, your blog should be good looking, easy to read and easy to navigate. Blogs, by their very nature are candy for search engines, and posts get indexed quickly.  I use Thesis for building blogs because it is so SEO powerful I feel that it really helps in that whole “If you Build it, Will they Come” question with which we all struggle!

If you’d like to see some evidence of the fact that they will come, I invite you to read the series I wrote, If you build it will they come?  http://tracigregory.com/2010/10/06/if-you-build-it-will-they-come-part-1-of-3/ is the first of three posts, and it will lead you to the next two.

What is Empire Avenue

They bill themselves as “The Social Media Exchange”

Empire Avenue is an exchange (think Stock Exchange) where you can invest in any social media profile (buying and selling shares) meet new people, and earn boatloads of virtual cash by being active and social online!

As my advisor put it, they (Empire Avenue) has taken everything all the social networking sites tell you you can’t do and rolled it into another social media.

Get More Juice for your Google Searches

As with any backlinking effort, one would hope that the links from Empire Avenue itself, along with the people who ‘buy’ a piece of you will create more juice for you when there is a search on your terms.

More Fun than Farmville
